Mega Market is Da Nang’s version of Costco. Here’s how to sign up for your free membership and save.
There are lots of places to buy groceries and household goods in Da Nang, and each has its advantages. Mega Market offers good prices and a large selection, including some foreign food products that are hard to find elsewhere.
Getting a membership is easy and free. Here’s what you’ll need to get yours and how the shopping process works.
Fill out an application
Head to Mega Market and go through the entrance (there is an entrance on the left and the exit is on the right). You’ll pass through one set of entry doors, keep going and pass through the second entry.
Here you’ll see a customer service counter on the left. This is where you apply. Just ask for a membership application and fill out the form. You’ll need your address, local phone number, and importantly, you’ll need to show your passport.
They’ll give you a membership card on the spot, and you can grab a cart and start shopping.
How to check out
Get in any of the checkout lines and load up your goods onto the conveyor belt when it’s your turn. Have your membership card ready to hand to the cashier — they will need it before they start scanning your purchases. They’ll scan your card and give it back to you.
As they scan your goods, they’ll move them to the packing area. You need to bring your own bags and pack up your purchases yourself. If you forget to bring bags, or if you end up buying more than you can fit in your bags, you can buy durable, reusable shopping bags at the checkout.
Now it’s time to pay for your stuff. You’ll be shown the final amount and you can either pay cash or use a credit card. Note: they don’t take American Express, so have a Visa or MasterCard on hand if you’re not using cash.
If you want your purchases delivered to your apartment, they have free delivery within 10km. Just fill out the form at the checkout.
Once you’ve paid, you’ll be given a full page printout receipt. Take your purchases to the exit, where a uniformed person (they look like security guards, but aren’t, really) will take your receipt, look over your items and then stamp your receipt.
That’s it.
One more thing
When you enter, if you are carrying a backpack (even a small one) or a handbag, you’ll need to stop at the security station on the right, immediately after entering the first set of entry doors. The clerk will either check your bag into a locker, or put a zip tie on the opening to prevent you from shoplifting. If you get zip tied, you’ll need to let the cashier know as soon as it’s your turn to checkout with your purchases so you can have it removed and get access to your wallet.
If you have any other kinds of bags that can’t be zip tied, you will need to have them checked into the storage lockers, and pick them up after you are done shopping.
